How to Become a Military Olympian

How to Become a Military OlympianHow to Become a Military OlympianMany athletes dream of standing atop an Olympic medal podium. However, without the necessary support, even the slightest chance of that happening is a long shot. Military athletes can find that support within their respective services. Though none of the services programs are the same, there are similarities. Army and Air Force Athlete Training The Army and Air Force each have two sports programs available to serious athletes. The Armys All-Army (Sports Program) chooses a number of athletes for any of about 20 sports and sends them to a three-week trial camp, said Karen White, chief of the Army Sports, Fitness and World Class Athlete Program. If they make the cut there, they become a member of the All-Army team for their given sport. The All-Army team then competes in the Armed Forces championships. Performance at this level decides placement on the All-Service team, which competes international military championsh ips organized by the Conseil International du Sport Militaire, or better known as CISM. The Air Force Sports Program is nearly identical. Athletes are selected from a swimming-pool of applications to attend a training camp and, upon selection, join an All-Air Force team. With skill and luck, its on to the All-Service team and CISM competitions. Both services also run a World Class Athlete Program designed to help nationally ranked athletes train toward a goal of competing in the Olympics. Duration and location are the two biggest differences between the services programs. The Army allows for a training period of three years prior to the Olympics. Air Force athletes are limited to two years. As for location, the Army WCAP is located at Fort Carson, Colo., near the Olympic training site, while the Air Force lets athletes train where its best for them. Navy and seestreitmacht Corps Olympic Athletes The Navy and the Marine Corps support structures for athletes are quite different fr om those of the Army and Air Force. Neither has a WCAP, nor do they actively recruit athletes. For the Navy, once an athlete is identified as being of Olympic caliber, he or she must request a special assignment consideration. Upon approval of special assignment, the program tries to relocate the athlete to a location beneficial for training purposes. Training usually begins about 18 months before the Games. If a Marine Corps athlete is invited by a sports national governing body to participate at a training center, he or she then becomes a member of the corps National Caliber Athlete Program. A Marine athlete is not allowed to train for more than three and a half years without returning to the fleet. Training Expenses for Military Athletes Training expenses are always a concern for an athlete. And all four services offer some type of financial assistance to their athletes. That assistance is usually in the form of entry fees, transportation and lodging associated with competiti on to advance their goals. If a sports national governing body taps an athlete for training, that concern over training costs becomes less urgent.

What do you do when someone at work is annoying you

What do you do when someone at work is annoying you What do you do when someone at work is annoying you You get to pick a few things in life â€" like your spouse, your friends, and your career if you’re lucky â€" but some decisions aren’t yours to make. Like who sits in the cubicle next to you. An annoying  officemate  can quickly escalate from a minor inconvenience  to the bane of your existence, causing you to dread going to work,  struggle to stay productive, or even land on the office naughty list yourself. But we’re here to tell you that  you have more control over your work experience than you might believe,  even if you work with  the most annoying person in the world. Here is a quick and easy reference guide to help you deal with annoyances at work, specifically when they stem from a particular person you cannot avoid:1. Speak upA vast majority of annoying people don’t even realize that their habits might annoy those around them. By simply stating, “I can’t focus when you’re clicking your pen like that,” you might be able to single-handedly resolve most of your co mplaints in a single exchange. The point is to be calm, specific and succinct; you don’t want it to turn into a long drawn-out conversation, but a way to bring a solution to a problem. Here are some great tips and tricks for having difficult conversations at work if you need a little guidance before diving in.2.   Get to know themOrson Scott Card said it best: “In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not them the way they love themselves.”By opening yourself up to your coworker and putting effort into building a friendship, you’ll begin to notice the things you like about them, which can overshadow the things you dislike about them or at least put them in better perspective. Even more importantly, you’ll gain an understanding of what drives their actions and behaviors, which can help you be more accepting and forgiving.3. Be mindfulOnly you can control your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors â€" not the jerk who cut you off on your way to work this morning and not your annoying coworker. Mindfulness can help you recognize and redirect your frustration before it changes the course of your day. Here are a few tips: Adjust your expectations; expectations that are too high result in frustration and disappointment Reframe your thoughts from, “Why am I here?” to, “I’m here because I choose to be here. I’m happy because I choose to be happy.” Take a deep breath when you begin to feel frustrated; reground yourself by placing your feet on the floor and feeling the ground beneath them get your mind off of the annoyance by diving into a challenging, meaningful project or task What not to doWhatever you do, DON’T take these routes:Don’t ask to be moved if you ever hope to advance in the organization. Leaders have to get results out of all kinds of people with no excuses. Asking for a new teammate or officemate due to personality differences is like advertising your ill-preparedness for promotion to the people who have your fate in their hands.Don’t allow your coworker to drive your own behaviors. If you have an outburst or miss a deadline because of your annoyance, it reflects only on you. Don’t use your coworker’s shortcomings as an excuse for your own.Don’t wait until you start with a company to understand their culture and values. Working with people who are like-minded, and in organizations that have high standards and a very selective hiring process, can improve your chances of working alongside people that don’t completely drive you nuts. Do yourself a favor and always check employer reviews on a company before accepting an offer.Key ta keaway: only you can direct your day, regardless of your cube mate. This article was originally published on Kununu.com.

Do You Meet the Requirements to Be a Police Officer

Do You Meet the Requirements to Be a Police Officer Do You Meet the Requirements to Be a Police Officer Before you fill out that application to be a police officer, there are a lot of things to consider. Besides the important questions of whether or not this may be the right career for you or whether you can handle the emotional, mental and physical rigors that come with a day on the job, theres one important question on which your entire career hopes will hinge: are you qualified to be a law enforcement officer? Few would disagree that not just anyone can be a cop, but what exactly are the qualifications you have to meet before you can become a police officer? Reasonable Regulations In the United States, each state sets its requirements that prospective police officer must meet to be hired  or even to attend a police academy. The reason is to ensure - as best as possible - that the right people are doing the job. Considering that officers  have the authority to make arrests and use force, not to mention the fact that they have access to large amounts of sensitive and private information, naturally, the public has a vested interest in making sure that the people holding these positions be trustworthy. To the extent possible, state requirements for law enforcement officers are designed to provide a minimum baseline that departments must follow in hiring officers. So What Are the Requirements to Be a Police Officer? Specific requirements will vary from state to state, but they generally follow the same pattern. Typically, to qualify to be a police officer in the United States you must: Be at least 19 years old (some states and individual departments may require you to be 21 or older)Be a United States citizen (either born or naturalized)At least a high school graduate and often have some collegePrior military service, a college degree or other relevant work experienceHave a valid driver licenseNot have been convicted of or plead no contest to a felonyBe of good moral characterBe physically capable of doing the jobBe fluent in the English language What Do the Requirements to Be a Police Officer Mean for You? Most of the standard requirements to work in law enforcement are objective and easy to interpret; for example, you either are or are not old enough, or you either have a driver license, or you dont. On the other hand, there are a couple of requirements that may leave you wondering still whether or not youre qualified for the job. About determining whether you are of good moral character, states dont usually have a list of behaviors that are or are not okay. Instead, they rely on general principles, such as your past criminal history, defaulted loans or other debts, or previously undetected crimes (crimes that you committed, but werent caught). Individual law enforcement departments are usually left to make the determination on whether or not your moral character is up to their standards, which is why they conduct such stringent background investigations and may require a polygraph exam and a psychological exam to determine your suitability for law enforcement. With regards to whether or not you meet the physical requirements for the job, the first step to finding out is by seeing a physician and getting a physical exam. You can also learn about the specific physical testing employed by your department of choice - whether a physical abilities test or a physical fitness assessment - and see how you measure up. That can give you an idea of where youre at, as well as where you need to be to get qualified. What If You Dont Meet the Qualifications to Be An Officer? Law enforcement isnt for everyone, but that doesnt have to mean that youre out of options. Depending on why you dont qualify for a job as a police officer, there are many other career options within criminology and criminal justice for you to choose from. With a little research and solid effort, you can find the right criminology career for you.

The Best Time to Take Your Graduation Year Off Your Resume

The Best Time to Take Your Graduation Year Off Your Resume The Best Time to Take Your Graduation Year Off Your Resume Age Discrimination is a real thing. Unfortunately, when you apply for jobs online the forms you fill out will make “Graduation Year” a required field in order to submit your resume. Now, this is a bit of a tricky situation. For one thing, companies are not allowed to ask you your age (but they can ask if you are over 18). You know your graduation year may give a company a ballpark estimate of your real age. Typically, most get their bachelor’s degree between ages 21 to 23. At first, it is great to have on your resume to indicate that you are a fresh job seeker on the market. But when should you take it off? As your career progresses, that graduation year combined with more than a decade’s worth of experience can lead to companies discriminating against you due to your age. In this post, we can explain one method to handle this and also the best time to take your graduation year off your resume. Methods of handling online forms with required fields The simplest and most direct way to answer this: Lie about your graduation year. If you are job seeking in your 40’s, you had most likely graduated in the early 1990’s. But you are protected against Age Discrimination in the United States. However, this is very difficult to prove. So, on your required graduation year, claim to have graduated 10 years later. Do the math and try to make it seem like you are really in your mid-30’s. After this, go through your social media accounts and make sure your birthday and graduation year does not appear. Companies are allowed to ask if you are older than 18, but they are never allowed to bluntly ask, “How old are you?”. The other thing you can do is skip the job application for requiring your graduation year. Any company that is deliberately trying to get around a law protecting you from Age Discrimination should give you cause for concern. The best time to take the graduation year off your resume You can imagine, given the fact this topic is taboo and can lead to legal problems in companies, there is no “official rule” that says you have to include the graduation year on your resume. More so, there is no rule as to when it should be taken off. However, when applying for jobs, the recommended amount of time for keeping the graduation year is about 10 to 15 years. Just like your work history, anything you learned 10 to 15 years ago will no longer be relevant to future jobs. You have grown so much since graduation and what you learned in school was just your starting point. You are now capable of so much more. If you are not sure you like having the date on your resume, no matter when you graduated, it is best to remove it completely. Why remove it completely from your resume Age Discrimination is not just a privilege of those seeking work after age 40. It happens to newcomers, too, and that can be discouraging. Some who are new to their industry come out of colleges and universities with fascinating experience in traveling, internships, and advanced degrees. They are thentreated as, “too young” when the resume is already abundant, can be as equally painful for the experienced 40+ job candidate who is treated as “too old”. The very appearance of a graduation year on a resume can, by itself, lead to a discriminatory way of thinking that counts against the job candidate at some point. Do yourself and your resume a favor There is no way to get around the discriminating thoughts of a person hiring. The best thing to do is keep the graduation year off the resume. By the time you get to an interview, and they meet you in person, they will start to put the pieces together as to whether or not you will be a great fit. At least by that point, you are meeting people face to face. If they discriminate based on age after meeting you, but they thought you were qualified enough to interview, that is a company you were never meant to work with.

How to Boost Your Strategic-Thinking Skills Finance Accounting

How to Boost Your Strategic-Thinking Skills Finance Accounting How to Boost Your Strategic-Thinking Skills Finance Accounting Whether you’re a financial manager or staff accountant, chances are good you spend your days in meetings, with clients and on daily tasks. That’s all well and good, but your packed schedule doesn’t leave you much time to reflect and build strategic-thinking skills. Concentrating on immediate business needs can be a bit like working with blinders on. You’re so focused on your to-do list and putting out fires that you may be neglecting the big picture. If this sounds like you, it’s time to take off those blinders. Accounting and finance executives need to have a master plan to keep their business growing. Employers prize accountants and analysts who possess strategic-thinking skills. In fact, according to a Robert Half survey, 30 percent of CFOs interviewed said such abilities are mandatory, and a further 56 percent consider it a nice-to-have quality. See the infographic, below, for more numbers from the survey. Strategic thinking doesn’t always come naturally, of course, and both managers and staff may need help to go beyond just “getting the job done.” The survey found that 46 percent of respondents said their companies don’t offer accountants any training in strategic-thinking skills. Even if professional development programs are not available at your workplace, you can still hone these abilities. Here are five ways for you, your staff and coworkers to become more innovative and forward thinking. 1. Forge new relationships Innovation requires different perspectives and new ideas. Strategic thinking is hard when you or your staff work in a silo, which reduces the supply of fresh input. To shake things up, find opportunities to learn from colleagues outside of finance. For example, volunteer to collaborate with IT when upgrading your enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. To prepare for the rollout of a new financial service, work with the creative department to design the marketing campaign. The more you know about other aspects of the business, the better you’ll be able to connect the dots and think strategically. 2. Always question and think deeper As you go through your workday, make it a habit to consider whether something could be done smarter. Don’t get comfortable with the status quo. Questioning yourself forces you to think deeper and possibly come up with better strategies. Asking others questions helps you consider and realize different perspectives. Pick coworkers’ brains about what they do, how they do it, their best practices, the mistakes they’ve made and what they’ve learned from them. Digging deeper can uncover new opportunities and keep your strategic-thinking skills sharp. Never stop learning and building skills The accounting and finance fields are constantly changing, and old tactics may not be as effective in light of new developments. Your strategic-thinking skills remain relevant when you’re well versed in compliance issues, human resources trends and the latest technologies. So, if you’re a manager, help your staff stay up to date with regular training in key areas. If you’re a staff-level finance professional, be proactive and ask for training. There’s no need to wait for your boss to hand you learning opportunities. Seek them out yourself by reading trade publications and networking with other industry professionals. Learn How to Embrace Lifelong Learning for Your Accounting Career. 4. Make decisions and take risks As with any expertise, the best way to hone your strategic-thinking skills is by doing. Don’t let yourself fall into a state of “analysis paralysis” for fear of making missteps, but don’t overthink it, either. Balance the pros and cons, the benefits and risks, and then make a decision. An important note to finance executives: Don’t punish employees for taking calculated risks. While you shouldn’t advocate for recklessness, you do want to encourage your staff to innovate. A wrong decision isn’t a failure if employees become more discerning and aware as a result of it. 5. Take time to recharge Periods of inactivity are essential not only for avoiding burnout, but for being more enterprising. Strategic-thinking skills flourish during downtime, when the brain has a chance to decompress, wander and visualize different outcomes. So don’t feel guilty about taking short breaks during the workday, going out for a real lunch. When you give yourself permission to get away from the office, you’ll come back to your job sharper than before. Another note to managers: You play a big role in helping staff recharge. This may require a shift in your corporate culture, as some businesses have the false mentality that 50- or 60-hour workweeks are laudable and the occasional long weekend is sufficient downtime. So persuade your workaholics to use their paid time off instead of rolling them over, and set the example by taking time off and unplugging. Strategic-thinking skills don’t appear overnight. In fact, they don’t develop after a single seminar, either. Becoming a more visionary finance professional is a life-long process, requiring time, personal initiative and perseverance. But the rewards - career advancement, greater job satisfaction, happy clients and stakeholders - are more than worth the effort. For career advice and management advice, keep reading the blog! This is what Bill Gates thinks you should read this summer

This is what Bill Gates thinks you should read this summer This is what Bill Gates thinks you should read this summer Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates released his annual summer reading list Monday, warning his audience it’s not going to be all light reading this year.“None of them are what most people think of as a light read,” Gates said in a  post on GatesNotes.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!If you’re looking for something with a little more diversity, Ladders recently compiled a reading list for Memorial Day Weekend but if you want something different, Gates said he was recently drawn to books about  â€œupheaval” whether it’s about the U.S. during times of war or the current economic system. He also plugged his wife, Melinda’s, new book “The Moment of Lift.”These are the five books on Gates’ summer reading list.Upheaval by Jared DiamondGates admitted he’s a fan of the Pulitzer Prize winner and described Upheaval as a book that “explores how societies react durin g moments of crisis.” While Gates admitted it sounds bleak, he came away more optimistic about how we solve problems which Diamond displays through examples of how nations have dealt through civil war and foreign threats.Nine Pints by Rose GeorgeWhile Nine Pints breaks away from Gates’ upheaval theme, it also touches upon a subject not for everyone: blood. Gates gives a PSA warning on his blog but said he was attracted to it due to the author, Rose George’s, connection with the subject (she has premenstrual dysphoric disorder).”It’s filled with super-interesting facts that will leave you with a new appreciation for blood,” Gates writes.A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor TowlesPublished in 2016, Gates is behind the pack with Towles’ bestseller and soon to be major television series. 5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly Recruiting

5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly Recruiting 5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly Recruiting Unless you’ve been living under an internet blocking, media-free rock for the last few years, you probably realize the importance of mobile devices in nearly every aspect of daily life.  From the ability to order food to be delivered to your home or office to watching the latest television show on your phone on the train ride home instead of while glued to the couch, processing of information via mobile devices is a staple in today’s modern world. It only makes sense, then, that a mobile-friendly site for job applicants is mission critical for those looking to land the best and brightest employment talent.  Regular readers will remember our recent delve into this topic in Four Surprising Truths About Mobile Recruiting, where we revealed the increasing number of Simply Hired web traffic generated from mobile devices.  If you feel like you’re lagging behind on the mobile game, or want to ensure you stack up with user expectations, we’ve compiled a checklist of 5 quick fixes for mobile-friendly recruiting. Know Your Audience Employers looking to fill critical positions would be well served knowing the various demographics of those who use mobile most frequently.  Previously it would have been safe to assume that those accessing website via smartphones were younger, more tech savvy generations. That assumption in today’s times would be wrong.  Increasingly older and more experienced job-seekers are turning to the convenience and accessibility of mobile platforms meaning that regardless of your positions’ desired experience, mobile access is still important.   There is some truth, however, in the notion that certain industries attract a higher number of mobile users.  It’s a given that anything tech related should be highly configured to allow accessibility from a variety of platforms.  For less tech savvy positions, don’t think you’re safe to assume that mobile accessibility isn’t important. Healthcare, transportation, and business and finance also attract mobile use.  Utilize website traffic analytics to identify what percentage of users originate from mobile and prioritize from there. Prioritize Short-Term Goals On the topic of prioritization, if you find that your mobile accessibility is lacking it can often be daunting to think of a radical change to your company website, recruitment pages, and even email outreach.  Simply Hired recommends taking a micro approach to bringing your business recruiting in line with the modern age. First, ensure that job listings are easily accessed via a mobile device.  This will often take no more than a day or so of programming or formatting time and will allow you to connect with potential quality recruits.  You may also want to consider outsourcing your listings to websites such as Simply Hired which are already fully mobile optimized. Next, it’s time to tackle your application process.  Developing a fully mobile function application system for recruits can take time but the effort will reap big rewards in the ability for candidates to easily apply on the go in between busy work schedules.  With these two main tasks accomplished, make a list of priorities for recruiting via mobile and approach one at a time rather than in a scorched earth fashion. Be Found A great mobile friendly website and application is only as good as its ability to attract quality candidates in the first place.  With the advent of social media, professional networking sites, and industry specific blogs and forums it’s important for employers to get their listings out there in order to reel in top talent. Post, link, and cross post job listings through outlets such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and your company’s own marketing and social media sites.  In addition, consider listing your open positions on frequently visited job boards to ensure the widest possible net for applicants. Optimize Simplify One of the critical considerations when ensuring your recruitment process is up to mobile standards is simplicity and optimization.  When developing a new platform, it’s important to test on a variety of technology and software diverse devices. Don’t neglect the laptop experience in this regard either.  Quality control is essential to any changes so take your time and get creative in accessing your own listings. Regardless of how accessible your listing may be on a certain device, if the application process or job listing itself is overly complication you’re going to get the employment equivalent of TL:DR (too long, didn’t read for those of us not acronym inclined).  Evaluate your application process with a critical eye to trimming the fat. Are there certain questions that are better addressed during the interview? How many clicks does it take to get to application submission? Does your process automatically pull information from uploaded resumes to prevent redundancy?  Answer these questions to help make your application and recruitment process as short and simple as possible for mobile job-seekers on the go. Identify Vendors with Mobile Expertise Last but not least, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to go it alone in the mobile recruiting game.  There are a host of software, platform, and even website development tools that are one click away from ensuring your application process is mobile friendly.   Recruitment websites and services, such as those offered by SimplyHired.com offer a host of easily integratable solutions built into their application hosting services.  Key elements to search out in a recruitment partner, regardless of name, will include: “One Click” and “Mobile Apply” options that make it clear to candidates they can apply instantly to your open listing. Applicant tracking systems that are mobile friendly Paths for easily uploading documents such as a resume, cover letter, or transcript direct from a mobile device Plenty of reporting that will allow you to critically evaluate your listings and recruitment process for future improvement At Simply Hired, were committed to helping employers and employees make lasting connections to build values and careers.  Stay tuned for the next in our series of articles where we further delve into recruiting best practices in the mobile age and beyond.
