How to be a better public speaker 27 tips for public speaking
How to be a better public speaker 27 tips for public speakingHow to be a better public speaker 27 tips for public speakingFive days before the release of the first iPad, James Murdoch, a high-ranking executive at News Corp., exchanged a flurry of emails with Steve Jobs. Murdoch and Jobs couldnt reach an agreement that would allow HarperCollins, a publisher owned by NewsCorp, to add its books to the Apple store before the launch.Their email exchange offers insight into what to do - and what not to do - when writing business emails.Murdochs notes are a classic example of how most of us tend to write long, with multiple ideas and no clear message. Jobs used simple tactics todominatethe correspondence. Here are five things we can learn from Jobs about how to write effective emails.1. Have one purposeThe most efficient emails include just one goal or question. For example, consider these lines from a long email from MurdochIf we could offer to you that a certain percentage of releases (50 %) would be available within your pricing structure ( or = 14.99), does that give you enough comfort? . . .But if you were willing to accept that a supplier can exploit other avenues (at prices not disadvantageous to you), with a guarantee of substantial volume through Apple- maybe I could work with HC to get to some common ground. Please let me know. . .But are you willing to accept that a supplier can exploit other avenues. Please let me know. What welches he asking? There are so many questions that Jobs answered exactly none of them. Jobs response was to-the-point, and he asked just one simple, rhetorical questionMaybe Im missing something, but I dont see any other alternatives. Do you?Its easy to imagine he was getting sick of the meandering correspondence. When you ask more than one question in an email, you run the risk of not getting an answer. A more effective strategy is to make one request per email. If you need to ask another question, wait to get the first response.2. Keep the design simpleA key to Apples success is its relentless commitment to simplicity. This is evident in the smallest design decisions on products, and its clear in Jobs emails. In Jobs emails, there is one common design element that enables the reader to quickly skim the email and understand its main points.Unlike Murdochs emails with their unwieldy paragraphs, Jobs emails included lists. He separated his messages into easily digestible points that contribute to the saatkorn argument.Consider using lists or adding space and emphasis in your own emails to drive home your point.3. Remove filler wordsJobs didnt use adjectives, adverbs, or other filler words. His sentences were straightforward and concise.Murdochs sentences, on the other hand, were long and clunky. For exampleIt seems though that we in each one we largely encounter a take it or leave it set of terms . . .Typo aside, heres what the sentence would be without fillersEach discussion gives us a take it or leave it set of ter ms . . .If you tend to use a lot of adverbs and adjectives - words like though, largely, seems, that, and really - make it a habit to remove them before you send an email. Reread the edited draft. If an adjective or adverb was necessary, itll be obvious, and you can add those back in. This will make your emails clearer and crisper.4. Use the active voiceMost rules have exceptions. This one does not. Stephen King has a strong opinion on the topicTwo pages of the passive voice- just about any business document ever written, in other words, not to mention reams of bad fiction- make me want to scream. Its weak, its circuitous, and its frequently tortuous, as well. How about thisMy first kiss will always be recalled by me as how my romance with Shayna was begun. . . . A simpler way to express this idea- sweeter and more forceful as well- might be thisMy romance with Shayna began with our first kiss. Ill never forget it.The passive voice often sounds timid and lacks clarity. For example , consider this line from MurdochIn short- we would like to be able to get something done with Apple- but there are legitimate concerns.Using the active voice would make it a bit clearerWe want to work with Apple- but there are legitimate concerns. If you read the sentences side by side, you can see what King means when he calls the passive weak. Focus on using the active voice and strong verbs to strengthen your message.5. Close with your requestIn marketing campaigns, copywriters always put the call to action at the very end. The same should be true of emails. Why?If the request is embedded in the middle of the email, its likely to be forgotten. At the end, the recipient has just finished reading and is focused on the next step.In the emails between Jobs and Murdoch, Jobss agenda, or ask, was straightforward. He wanted Murdochs company on board for the iPad launch. But even though the point was abundantly clear, Jobs still ended on itWed love to have HC among the other publishers.Th e purpose of most emails isnt this complex. We often use emails to request a meeting, get permission for a change, obtain information, or do other daily tasks. But with a simple ask, ending with your request is even more important. When the recipient dashes off their reply, theyre more likely to respond to the last thing that was mentioned. It can often feel as if email takes up a lot of our workday. With these simple tips, not only will you simplify your email routine, but youll also find youll get better results.Natasa Lekic is the Founder of New York Book Editors, an editorial service that connects authors to veteran industry editors. New study 4 cups of coffee daily may make you practically immortal
New study 4 cups of coffee daily may make you practically immortalNew study 4 cups of coffee daily may make you practically immortalThe fountain of youth is right in our coffee cups. A new study found a link between drinking coffee and a longer life.In new research that was presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, researchers found that the more cups of coffee you drink, the lower your risk of dying. In a 10-year study of 20,000 participants, the people who hadfour cups of coffee per day had a 64% lower risk of dying during the study than those who never drank coffee. Even controlling for factors like people who put sugar in their coffee or the participants gender, diet, or age, the link between caffeine consumption and staying alive remained strong.Older adults can benefit from drinking coffeeBy the way, the Mayo Clinic also says that up to 4 cups of coffee a day is safe for adults. The link was particularly strong with older adults. Participants who were at least 45 years old and older had a 30% lower risk of mortality when they drank two cups of coffee a day.The studys lead author Dr. Adela Navarro suspects that this finding may be because coffee contains several bioactive compounds with potential beneficial properties. Those benefits can include anti-inflammatory properties that can protect elderly adults immune systems. In fact, increasing your coffee intake has been linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The Spanish study builds off of previous research that found that we can drink up to four eight-ounce cups of coffee before its no longer good for our health. In fact, one studys 15-year review of all coffee studies found that 400 mg caffeine/day in healthy adults is not associated with overt, adverse cardiovascular effects, behavioral effects, reproductive and developmental effects, acute effects, or bone status. So live long and drink coffee. Immortality may be just one sip away.

Certifications and Your Human Resources Career
Certifications and Your Human Resources CareerCertifications and Your Human Resources CareerPeople considering a career in the field of human resources frequently ask whether they need a degree or certifications to get employment in the field of HR. The answer is complex, with factors extending beyond the financial return, requiring thoughtful consideration as to how a certification might benefit you personally. Generally, certifications are considered a worthwhile investment. Why an HR Certification Might Be Needed Going forward with your career, you will be competing in the job market with people who have earned similar certifications. Companies that are looking for more strategic, financial, and organization development skills in their HR staff dont advertise ansicht credentials as essential for applicants. In fact, many post these certifications as bedarfsweise or decide not to require them at all, although they can be a substantial boost to career success. Obtaining either o f the available certifications involves an investment of money for preparation courses and books. Theres also the time investment that requires hours and hours of study, often attending in-room class sessions. Talk to current HR people where you liveand want to work to find out answers from informed people about whether you need an HR certification. People reporting actual local conditions may differ from what you hear from industry publications or your schools career office. Different Types of Certifications No certification is required to work in the field of human resources. Certifications are optional in most circumstances. Increasingly, however, human resources professionals are seekingcertificationas a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) through the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). Recently, the HRCI added Associate Professional of HR (APHR) for college students. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has devel oped and is offering a competing certification programthat has been available since 2014. SHRM has established two competency-based certifications, the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) for early- and mid-career professionals and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) for senior-level practitioners. Additional certifications are available through professional associations in such areas as compensation and benefits management. The Association for Talent Development (ATD) offers certification as a Certified Professional in Learning wertzuwachs (CPLP). Compensation Differences According to research by Payscale.com, certified HR professionals make substantially more money than their uncertified counterparts. Employees with the SPHR certification make 93 percent more money overall than those who have no certification. Those with the SPHR also make 49 percent more than those who stop with the PHR. For all HR employees, the median pay with a PHR is $59,100, with an SPHR is $87,900, and is $45,600 with no certification. HR Promotions for Employees with Certifications HR professionals who have earned SPHR or PHR certifications also receive more promotions and achieve career success more quickly than their uncertified counterparts. For example, the percentage of HR employees receiving a promotion increased substantially with certification. For professionals at the HR associate level, 63 percent of professionals with certification were promoted to HR administrator while only 34 percent of uncertified employees were promoted. Promotions from HR administrator to HR generalist came in at 57 percent for certified employees and 27 percent for uncertified employees. As people progress in their HR careers, more and more personnel have industry certifications. At the vice president level, 42 percent of people holding these positions are certified. Thirty-nine percent of employees with the title of HR director and 30 percent of HR managers hold a certifica tion.

Send the Resume Solo
Send the Resume SoloSend the Resume SoloSending your clips, file attachments and portfolios unsolicited with your resume can do more harm than good.An employer asks a potential technology director to compile a presentation of his technology vision. He chooses to layout the presentation in PowerPoint, and he lands the job as a data-center manager. Would he still have been successful had he sent the presentation early on with his application before he was asked to send it?Some hiring professionals give a thumbs-up to unsolicited attachments, while many resent having their inboxes clogged with unsolicited materials from applicants. But the common wisdom is to leid send anything that wasnt specifically requested, according to several hiring professionals who spoke to Ladders. They also said job seekers who do attach unsolicited clips, portfolio materials or reference lists run the risk of alienating such professionals and potentially hurting their chances of getting interviewed.Give interv iewers the autonomy to askRather than sending out materials unsolicited, job seekers should first establish a connection with someone who can hire them and who expresses interest in seeing their collaterals, some hiring professionals recommend.(After you establish a connection), you can ask, Oh yeah, and would you like to see this? said Stephen Balzac, president of organizational development firm 7 Steps Ahead and a consultant on interviewing techniques. My message to people is always, Make a connection, network. And then you can ask them specifically what they want to see, Balzac said. Allowing the other partie that autonomy is more powerful than making (the decision) for them. Otherwise, the problem is, youre guessing. I suspect that if you asked 100 people how theyd react if they got a portfolio, youd get a hundred answers. To short-circuit the problem, Balzac suggested including a URL in your cover letter that points to where your materials are located verbunden. Having a URL and your stuff there online is good because instead of deluging people with material, youre giving them freedom to look at it if and when they want, he says. Youre bedrngnis telling the interviewer how to do their job. Youre merely giving them the freedom to get additional information from you if they want it.Candidates should keep their correspondence to the barebones until told to do otherwise, said Ellen B. Vance, senior consultant and advisory services practice leader for human resources consulting firm Titan Group. What stands out for her in particular is whether a job seeker follows instructions on what to include, she says. I prefer that the candidate not send photos/clips, etc., with the resume, Vance says. These are better shared in an interview. I do, however, look at whether the applicant was able to follow the simple instructions provided in the job posting when I make requests for specific information. But read carefully. While Vances instructions do not call for samples, oth ers may. Marsh Sutherland, a professional recruiter and president of Walden Recruiting, in Concord, MA, makes it a habit to request sample code from software engineer candidates for every submission. This is a great way for them to demonstrate their quality above and beyond simple text on a resume, Sutherland says.Go online instead of attachingSending a link to an online portfolio, as opposed to including materials as attachments, is always OK, according to Rahul D. Yodh, a partner in the legal executive search and consulting firm Link Legal Search Group. To create such a portfolio, LinkedIn is the site of choice for many professionals. Other options include VisualCV, which allows multiple curriculum vitae versions. You can also launch your own online brand for very little money with a branded domain name (Web address), Web site and blog and then linking them all together to host your work samples and promote your professional vision. If you have an online portfolio, be sure to include articles youve written, links to articles in which youve been quoted, references, work samples, presentations and Webcasts in which you present professional content.Industry-specific attachment rulesIn some industries, attachments are de rigueur, said Yodh. Most law firms require transcripts when considering attorney candidates, and without a transcript your application is incomplete, he said.Other industries require artwork or writing samples, including journalism outlets or advertising firms. If it is the norm in your industry then feel free to submit it, and you wont have to worry about being removed from consideration, Yodh said. But even if your industry is tolerant of or requires attachments, dont go overboard, Yodh advised. Feel free to submit a list of references, but dont attach five letters of reference. If you do send attachments, remember to keep them as small as possible. Send a couple of MBs of attachments and the e-mail server or firewall on the other end might bounce i t back, Yodh said. And what of the technology director who landed the job as a data-center manager after having presented his PowerPoint presentation? His take as a job seeker is to never send attachments. No, its not something youd think to do unless you see it as a requirement, said the professional, whos in his 40s and requested that Ladders not reveal his name. That was not a requirement for this position. It was more, OK, you made it to the final round, here are a number of questions we would like for you to address. The presentation not only answered any outstanding questions, but gave the employer the confidence they needed to make the hire.

How to Become a Military Olympian
How to Become a Military OlympianHow to Become a Military OlympianMany athletes dream of standing atop an Olympic medal podium. However, without the necessary support, even the slightest chance of that happening is a long shot. Military athletes can find that support within their respective services. Though none of the services programs are the same, there are similarities. Army and Air Force Athlete Training The Army and Air Force each have two sports programs available to serious athletes. The Armys All-Army (Sports Program) chooses a number of athletes for any of about 20 sports and sends them to a three-week trial camp, said Karen White, chief of the Army Sports, Fitness and World Class Athlete Program. If they make the cut there, they become a member of the All-Army team for their given sport. The All-Army team then competes in the Armed Forces championships. Performance at this level decides placement on the All-Service team, which competes international military championsh ips organized by the Conseil International du Sport Militaire, or better known as CISM. The Air Force Sports Program is nearly identical. Athletes are selected from a swimming-pool of applications to attend a training camp and, upon selection, join an All-Air Force team. With skill and luck, its on to the All-Service team and CISM competitions. Both services also run a World Class Athlete Program designed to help nationally ranked athletes train toward a goal of competing in the Olympics. Duration and location are the two biggest differences between the services programs. The Army allows for a training period of three years prior to the Olympics. Air Force athletes are limited to two years. As for location, the Army WCAP is located at Fort Carson, Colo., near the Olympic training site, while the Air Force lets athletes train where its best for them. Navy and seestreitmacht Corps Olympic Athletes The Navy and the Marine Corps support structures for athletes are quite different fr om those of the Army and Air Force. Neither has a WCAP, nor do they actively recruit athletes. For the Navy, once an athlete is identified as being of Olympic caliber, he or she must request a special assignment consideration. Upon approval of special assignment, the program tries to relocate the athlete to a location beneficial for training purposes. Training usually begins about 18 months before the Games. If a Marine Corps athlete is invited by a sports national governing body to participate at a training center, he or she then becomes a member of the corps National Caliber Athlete Program. A Marine athlete is not allowed to train for more than three and a half years without returning to the fleet. Training Expenses for Military Athletes Training expenses are always a concern for an athlete. And all four services offer some type of financial assistance to their athletes. That assistance is usually in the form of entry fees, transportation and lodging associated with competiti on to advance their goals. If a sports national governing body taps an athlete for training, that concern over training costs becomes less urgent.

An annoying officemate can quickly escalate from a minor inconvenience to the bane of your existence, causing you to dread going to work, struggle to stay productive, or even land on the office naughty list yourself. But weâre here to tell you that you have more control over your work experience than you might believe, even if you work with the most annoying person in the world. Here is a quick and easy reference guide to help you deal with annoyances at work, specifically when they stem from a particular person you cannot avoid:1. Speak upA vast majority of annoying people donât even realize that their habits might annoy those around them. By simply stating, âI canât focus when youâre clicking your pen like that,â you might be able to single-handedly resolve most of your co mplaints in a single exchange. The point is to be calm, specific and succinct; you donât want it to turn into a long drawn-out conversation, but a way to bring a solution to a problem. Here are some great tips and tricks for having difficult conversations at work if you need a little guidance before diving in.2. Get to know themOrson Scott Card said it best: âIn the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think itâs impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not them the way they love themselves.âBy opening yourself up to your coworker and putting effort into building a friendship, youâll begin to notice the things you like about them, which can overshadow the things you dislike about them or at least put them in better perspective. Even more importantly, youâll gain an understanding of what drives their actions and behaviors, which can help you be more accepting and forgiving.3. Be mindfulOnly you can control your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors â" not the jerk who cut you off on your way to work this morning and not your annoying coworker. Mindfulness can help you recognize and redirect your frustration before it changes the course of your day. Here are a few tips: Adjust your expectations; expectations that are too high result in frustration and disappointment Reframe your thoughts from, âWhy am I here?â to, âIâm here because I choose to be here. Iâm happy because I choose to be happy.â Take a deep breath when you begin to feel frustrated; reground yourself by placing your feet on the floor and feeling the ground beneath them get your mind off of the annoyance by diving into a challenging, meaningful project or task What not to doWhatever you do, DONâT take these routes:Donât ask to be moved if you ever hope to advance in the organization. Leaders have to get results out of all kinds of people with no excuses. Asking for a new teammate or officemate due to personality differences is like advertising your ill-preparedness for promotion to the people who have your fate in their hands.Donât allow your coworker to drive your own behaviors. If you have an outburst or miss a deadline because of your annoyance, it reflects only on you. Donât use your coworkerâs shortcomings as an excuse for your own.Donât wait until you start with a company to understand their culture and values. Working with people who are like-minded, and in organizations that have high standards and a very selective hiring process, can improve your chances of working alongside people that donât completely drive you nuts. Do yourself a favor and always check employer reviews on a company before accepting an offer.Key ta keaway: only you can direct your day, regardless of your cube mate. This article was originally published on Kununu.com.

Do You Meet the Requirements to Be a Police Officer
Do You Meet the Requirements to Be a Police Officer Do You Meet the Requirements to Be a Police Officer Before you fill out that application to be a police officer, there are a lot of things to consider. Besides the important questions of whether or not this may be the right career for you or whether you can handle the emotional, mental and physical rigors that come with a day on the job, theres one important question on which your entire career hopes will hinge: are you qualified to be a law enforcement officer? Few would disagree that not just anyone can be a cop, but what exactly are the qualifications you have to meet before you can become a police officer? Reasonable Regulations In the United States, each state sets its requirements that prospective police officer must meet to be hired or even to attend a police academy. The reason is to ensure - as best as possible - that the right people are doing the job. Considering that officers have the authority to make arrests and use force, not to mention the fact that they have access to large amounts of sensitive and private information, naturally, the public has a vested interest in making sure that the people holding these positions be trustworthy. To the extent possible, state requirements for law enforcement officers are designed to provide a minimum baseline that departments must follow in hiring officers. So What Are the Requirements to Be a Police Officer? Specific requirements will vary from state to state, but they generally follow the same pattern. Typically, to qualify to be a police officer in the United States you must: Be at least 19 years old (some states and individual departments may require you to be 21 or older)Be a United States citizen (either born or naturalized)At least a high school graduate and often have some collegePrior military service, a college degree or other relevant work experienceHave a valid driver licenseNot have been convicted of or plead no contest to a felonyBe of good moral characterBe physically capable of doing the jobBe fluent in the English language What Do the Requirements to Be a Police Officer Mean for You? Most of the standard requirements to work in law enforcement are objective and easy to interpret; for example, you either are or are not old enough, or you either have a driver license, or you dont. On the other hand, there are a couple of requirements that may leave you wondering still whether or not youre qualified for the job. About determining whether you are of good moral character, states dont usually have a list of behaviors that are or are not okay. Instead, they rely on general principles, such as your past criminal history, defaulted loans or other debts, or previously undetected crimes (crimes that you committed, but werent caught). Individual law enforcement departments are usually left to make the determination on whether or not your moral character is up to their standards, which is why they conduct such stringent background investigations and may require a polygraph exam and a psychological exam to determine your suitability for law enforcement. With regards to whether or not you meet the physical requirements for the job, the first step to finding out is by seeing a physician and getting a physical exam. You can also learn about the specific physical testing employed by your department of choice - whether a physical abilities test or a physical fitness assessment - and see how you measure up. That can give you an idea of where youre at, as well as where you need to be to get qualified. What If You Dont Meet the Qualifications to Be An Officer? Law enforcement isnt for everyone, but that doesnt have to mean that youre out of options. Depending on why you dont qualify for a job as a police officer, there are many other career options within criminology and criminal justice for you to choose from. With a little research and solid effort, you can find the right criminology career for you.

The Best Time to Take Your Graduation Year Off Your Resume
The Best Time to Take Your Graduation Year Off Your Resume The Best Time to Take Your Graduation Year Off Your Resume Age Discrimination is a real thing. Unfortunately, when you apply for jobs online the forms you fill out will make âGraduation Yearâ a required field in order to submit your resume. Now, this is a bit of a tricky situation. For one thing, companies are not allowed to ask you your age (but they can ask if you are over 18). You know your graduation year may give a company a ballpark estimate of your real age. Typically, most get their bachelorâs degree between ages 21 to 23. At first, it is great to have on your resume to indicate that you are a fresh job seeker on the market. But when should you take it off? As your career progresses, that graduation year combined with more than a decadeâs worth of experience can lead to companies discriminating against you due to your age. In this post, we can explain one method to handle this and also the best time to take your graduation year off your resume. Methods of handling online forms with required fields The simplest and most direct way to answer this: Lie about your graduation year. If you are job seeking in your 40âs, you had most likely graduated in the early 1990âs. But you are protected against Age Discrimination in the United States. However, this is very difficult to prove. So, on your required graduation year, claim to have graduated 10 years later. Do the math and try to make it seem like you are really in your mid-30âs. After this, go through your social media accounts and make sure your birthday and graduation year does not appear. Companies are allowed to ask if you are older than 18, but they are never allowed to bluntly ask, âHow old are you?â. The other thing you can do is skip the job application for requiring your graduation year. Any company that is deliberately trying to get around a law protecting you from Age Discrimination should give you cause for concern. The best time to take the graduation year off your resume You can imagine, given the fact this topic is taboo and can lead to legal problems in companies, there is no âofficial ruleâ that says you have to include the graduation year on your resume. More so, there is no rule as to when it should be taken off. However, when applying for jobs, the recommended amount of time for keeping the graduation year is about 10 to 15 years. Just like your work history, anything you learned 10 to 15 years ago will no longer be relevant to future jobs. You have grown so much since graduation and what you learned in school was just your starting point. You are now capable of so much more. If you are not sure you like having the date on your resume, no matter when you graduated, it is best to remove it completely. Why remove it completely from your resume Age Discrimination is not just a privilege of those seeking work after age 40. It happens to newcomers, too, and that can be discouraging. Some who are new to their industry come out of colleges and universities with fascinating experience in traveling, internships, and advanced degrees. They are thentreated as, âtoo youngâ when the resume is already abundant, can be as equally painful for the experienced 40+ job candidate who is treated as âtoo oldâ. The very appearance of a graduation year on a resume can, by itself, lead to a discriminatory way of thinking that counts against the job candidate at some point. Do yourself and your resume a favor There is no way to get around the discriminating thoughts of a person hiring. The best thing to do is keep the graduation year off the resume. By the time you get to an interview, and they meet you in person, they will start to put the pieces together as to whether or not you will be a great fit. At least by that point, you are meeting people face to face. If they discriminate based on age after meeting you, but they thought you were qualified enough to interview, that is a company you were never meant to work with.

How to Boost Your Strategic-Thinking Skills Finance Accounting
How to Boost Your Strategic-Thinking Skills Finance Accounting How to Boost Your Strategic-Thinking Skills Finance Accounting Whether youâre a financial manager or staff accountant, chances are good you spend your days in meetings, with clients and on daily tasks. Thatâs all well and good, but your packed schedule doesnât leave you much time to reflect and build strategic-thinking skills. Concentrating on immediate business needs can be a bit like working with blinders on. Youâre so focused on your to-do list and putting out fires that you may be neglecting the big picture. If this sounds like you, itâs time to take off those blinders. Accounting and finance executives need to have a master plan to keep their business growing. Employers prize accountants and analysts who possess strategic-thinking skills. In fact, according to a Robert Half survey, 30 percent of CFOs interviewed said such abilities are mandatory, and a further 56 percent consider it a nice-to-have quality. See the infographic, below, for more numbers from the survey. Strategic thinking doesnât always come naturally, of course, and both managers and staff may need help to go beyond just âgetting the job done.â The survey found that 46 percent of respondents said their companies donât offer accountants any training in strategic-thinking skills. Even if professional development programs are not available at your workplace, you can still hone these abilities. Here are five ways for you, your staff and coworkers to become more innovative and forward thinking. 1. Forge new relationships Innovation requires different perspectives and new ideas. Strategic thinking is hard when you or your staff work in a silo, which reduces the supply of fresh input. To shake things up, find opportunities to learn from colleagues outside of finance. For example, volunteer to collaborate with IT when upgrading your enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. To prepare for the rollout of a new financial service, work with the creative department to design the marketing campaign. The more you know about other aspects of the business, the better youâll be able to connect the dots and think strategically. 2. Always question and think deeper As you go through your workday, make it a habit to consider whether something could be done smarter. Donât get comfortable with the status quo. Questioning yourself forces you to think deeper and possibly come up with better strategies. Asking others questions helps you consider and realize different perspectives. Pick coworkersâ brains about what they do, how they do it, their best practices, the mistakes theyâve made and what theyâve learned from them. Digging deeper can uncover new opportunities and keep your strategic-thinking skills sharp. Never stop learning and building skills The accounting and finance fields are constantly changing, and old tactics may not be as effective in light of new developments. Your strategic-thinking skills remain relevant when youâre well versed in compliance issues, human resources trends and the latest technologies. So, if youâre a manager, help your staff stay up to date with regular training in key areas. If youâre a staff-level finance professional, be proactive and ask for training. Thereâs no need to wait for your boss to hand you learning opportunities. Seek them out yourself by reading trade publications and networking with other industry professionals. Learn How to Embrace Lifelong Learning for Your Accounting Career. 4. Make decisions and take risks As with any expertise, the best way to hone your strategic-thinking skills is by doing. Donât let yourself fall into a state of âanalysis paralysisâ for fear of making missteps, but donât overthink it, either. Balance the pros and cons, the benefits and risks, and then make a decision. An important note to finance executives: Donât punish employees for taking calculated risks. While you shouldnât advocate for recklessness, you do want to encourage your staff to innovate. A wrong decision isnât a failure if employees become more discerning and aware as a result of it. 5. Take time to recharge Periods of inactivity are essential not only for avoiding burnout, but for being more enterprising. Strategic-thinking skills flourish during downtime, when the brain has a chance to decompress, wander and visualize different outcomes. So donât feel guilty about taking short breaks during the workday, going out for a real lunch. When you give yourself permission to get away from the office, youâll come back to your job sharper than before. Another note to managers: You play a big role in helping staff recharge. This may require a shift in your corporate culture, as some businesses have the false mentality that 50- or 60-hour workweeks are laudable and the occasional long weekend is sufficient downtime. So persuade your workaholics to use their paid time off instead of rolling them over, and set the example by taking time off and unplugging. Strategic-thinking skills donât appear overnight. In fact, they donât develop after a single seminar, either. Becoming a more visionary finance professional is a life-long process, requiring time, personal initiative and perseverance. But the rewards - career advancement, greater job satisfaction, happy clients and stakeholders - are more than worth the effort. For career advice and management advice, keep reading the blog! This is what Bill Gates thinks you should read this summer This is what Bill Gates thinks you should read this summer Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates released his annual summer reading list Monday, warning his audience itâs not going to be all light reading this year.âNone of them are what most people think of as a light read,â Gates said in a post on GatesNotes.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!If youâre looking for something with a little more diversity, Ladders recently compiled a reading list for Memorial Day Weekend but if you want something different, Gates said he was recently drawn to books about âupheavalâ whether itâs about the U.S. during times of war or the current economic system. He also plugged his wife, Melindaâs, new book âThe Moment of Lift.âThese are the five books on Gatesâ summer reading list.Upheaval by Jared DiamondGates admitted heâs a fan of the Pulitzer Prize winner and described Upheaval as a book that âexplores how societies react durin g moments of crisis.â While Gates admitted it sounds bleak, he came away more optimistic about how we solve problems which Diamond displays through examples of how nations have dealt through civil war and foreign threats.Nine Pints by Rose GeorgeWhile Nine Pints breaks away from Gatesâ upheaval theme, it also touches upon a subject not for everyone: blood. Gates gives a PSA warning on his blog but said he was attracted to it due to the author, Rose Georgeâs, connection with the subject (she has premenstrual dysphoric disorder).âItâs filled with super-interesting facts that will leave you with a new appreciation for blood,â Gates writes.A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor TowlesPublished in 2016, Gates is behind the pack with Towlesâ bestseller and soon to be major television series. 5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly Recruiting
5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly Recruiting 5 Quick Fixes for Mobile-Friendly Recruiting Unless youâve been living under an internet blocking, media-free rock for the last few years, you probably realize the importance of mobile devices in nearly every aspect of daily life. From the ability to order food to be delivered to your home or office to watching the latest television show on your phone on the train ride home instead of while glued to the couch, processing of information via mobile devices is a staple in todayâs modern world. It only makes sense, then, that a mobile-friendly site for job applicants is mission critical for those looking to land the best and brightest employment talent. Regular readers will remember our recent delve into this topic in Four Surprising Truths About Mobile Recruiting, where we revealed the increasing number of Simply Hired web traffic generated from mobile devices. If you feel like youâre lagging behind on the mobile game, or want to ensure you stack up with user expectations, weâve compiled a checklist of 5 quick fixes for mobile-friendly recruiting. Know Your Audience Employers looking to fill critical positions would be well served knowing the various demographics of those who use mobile most frequently. Previously it would have been safe to assume that those accessing website via smartphones were younger, more tech savvy generations. That assumption in todayâs times would be wrong. Increasingly older and more experienced job-seekers are turning to the convenience and accessibility of mobile platforms meaning that regardless of your positionsâ desired experience, mobile access is still important. There is some truth, however, in the notion that certain industries attract a higher number of mobile users. Itâs a given that anything tech related should be highly configured to allow accessibility from a variety of platforms. For less tech savvy positions, donât think youâre safe to assume that mobile accessibility isnât important. Healthcare, transportation, and business and finance also attract mobile use. Utilize website traffic analytics to identify what percentage of users originate from mobile and prioritize from there. Prioritize Short-Term Goals On the topic of prioritization, if you find that your mobile accessibility is lacking it can often be daunting to think of a radical change to your company website, recruitment pages, and even email outreach. Simply Hired recommends taking a micro approach to bringing your business recruiting in line with the modern age. First, ensure that job listings are easily accessed via a mobile device. This will often take no more than a day or so of programming or formatting time and will allow you to connect with potential quality recruits. You may also want to consider outsourcing your listings to websites such as Simply Hired which are already fully mobile optimized. Next, itâs time to tackle your application process. Developing a fully mobile function application system for recruits can take time but the effort will reap big rewards in the ability for candidates to easily apply on the go in between busy work schedules. With these two main tasks accomplished, make a list of priorities for recruiting via mobile and approach one at a time rather than in a scorched earth fashion. Be Found A great mobile friendly website and application is only as good as its ability to attract quality candidates in the first place. With the advent of social media, professional networking sites, and industry specific blogs and forums itâs important for employers to get their listings out there in order to reel in top talent. Post, link, and cross post job listings through outlets such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and your companyâs own marketing and social media sites. In addition, consider listing your open positions on frequently visited job boards to ensure the widest possible net for applicants. Optimize Simplify One of the critical considerations when ensuring your recruitment process is up to mobile standards is simplicity and optimization. When developing a new platform, itâs important to test on a variety of technology and software diverse devices. Donât neglect the laptop experience in this regard either. Quality control is essential to any changes so take your time and get creative in accessing your own listings. Regardless of how accessible your listing may be on a certain device, if the application process or job listing itself is overly complication youâre going to get the employment equivalent of TL:DR (too long, didnât read for those of us not acronym inclined). Evaluate your application process with a critical eye to trimming the fat. Are there certain questions that are better addressed during the interview? How many clicks does it take to get to application submission? Does your process automatically pull information from uploaded resumes to prevent redundancy? Answer these questions to help make your application and recruitment process as short and simple as possible for mobile job-seekers on the go. Identify Vendors with Mobile Expertise Last but not least, itâs important to remember that you donât have to go it alone in the mobile recruiting game. There are a host of software, platform, and even website development tools that are one click away from ensuring your application process is mobile friendly. Recruitment websites and services, such as those offered by SimplyHired.com offer a host of easily integratable solutions built into their application hosting services. Key elements to search out in a recruitment partner, regardless of name, will include: âOne Clickâ and âMobile Applyâ options that make it clear to candidates they can apply instantly to your open listing. Applicant tracking systems that are mobile friendly Paths for easily uploading documents such as a resume, cover letter, or transcript direct from a mobile device Plenty of reporting that will allow you to critically evaluate your listings and recruitment process for future improvement At Simply Hired, were committed to helping employers and employees make lasting connections to build values and careers. Stay tuned for the next in our series of articles where we further delve into recruiting best practices in the mobile age and beyond.

Problem solving: No matter what the job is, eventually something will go wrong and employers want to know that youâre capable of coming up with a quick and effective solution. In fact, there are jobs that are essentially nothing but solving problems for the company, the clients, or both. Related: Crisis Management. Related: Creative Thinking. Communication: Whether itâs written or oral, being able to communicate with your boss, coworkers, and clients/customers in all situations is very valuable. The better you are at it, the better results you will generate. Related: Interpersonal Communication. Teamwork: Most jobs will sometimes require you to do work with other people at some point, and employers want to know that you can succeed in a team environment. Some jobs will prize this skill more than others. Related: Collaboration. Organization: This is not just about having a neat desk, but organizing tasks and projects for your coworkers, management, and at the very least, yourself! Finding out what range of hard skills youâll be expected to have in your field might require a bit of research. Here are some hard skills that tend to be idealized by almost every industry. Computer Software Application Knowledge: The list of professions that does not require you to use computers and certain types of software is very short. You could very likely break up âcomputer skillsâ into two or three specific technical proficiencies for your field. Design: Aside from the obvious professions like graphic or web design, there are jobs in marketing, advertising, branding, engineering, and construction that require some type of design skills- even if itâs only for drawing up presentations. Data Analysis: Big Data is very in vogue right now, and there are a lot of jobs out there where you will be called upon to analyze some type of data and extrapolate a practical use from it. Negotiation: There are many jobs that involve selling a product or service, purchasing stock or merchandise, brokering deals for production or transportation, establishing partnerships for advertising or investments, and so on. Mathematics: Finance, business, engineering, construction, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and operations will require you to be competent with math in some capacity. If youâre in a profession that is more math-heavy, consider splitting it up into a few more specific skills as with computers. Look for Target Keywords If youâre still not sure if any of these skills are right for your situation, one quick way to check which skills the employer is seeking is to check the job description. Read through it a few times and youâll likely spot three or four key skills mentioned several times throughout the document.
